Started out as an interesting day. The battery was about 11.6 volts. The engine started ok. Headed out the taxiways and had to cross the active runway. Was holding short, called the crossing, gave it some throttle to get moving, reduced power as I started to cross and the engine quit when I was 10 feet into the runway. The voltage was too low to re-start. Jumped out of the plane and pushed it back off the runway (luckily very little traffic), back up the taxiway and back to the tiedown area. One good thing, the plane rolls very easily.
I connected a charger to the battery and considered what had happened. The engine RPM was generally low during the start/taxi period, too low for the alternator to provide more power than the avionics was drawing. The battery was continuing to discharging during this time. When I got to the runway, the voltage was too low to run the secondary ignition. When I pulled the power back, the RPM's were too low for the magnetrons to continue working, thus no more sparks.
After a charge, started again but kept unessential avionics off until I was at the runway and ready to takeoff. The flight was similar to the first, climb to 4500ft, 360 turns, climb to 6000, turns and slow flight. Lowered flaps for the first time, nothing unusual, more slow flight and simulated go-arounds. Did some level straight lines, tried the autopilot altitude hold and it seemed to work and make corrections in the right direction. Engine numbers were good. The #1 cyl was running the hottest and I had to lower the nose a few times for a less steep climb and more airspeed to stay in limits.
Made decending turns to the airport for landing. I was a bit fast, floated awhile, but just kept bringing the nose up slowly until touchdown. Was another no-flap landing. Wind was about 10G15 down the runway.
